NOTES
FOR THE GUIDANCE OF CANDIDATES
USAGE
In
general terms, the holder of an unrestricted Certificate of Competency
as a Coxswain is qualified to act in the following positions;
- Master
on a commercial ship less than 12 metres in length for inshore
operations (within 15 nautical miles of the coast);
- Master
on a fishing ship less than 15 metres in length within the Fishing
Ship Operational Area;
- Engineer
on a fishing or trading vessel less than 12 metres in length with
engines less than 250 kW for inshore operations (within 15 nautical
miles of the coast)
- Mate
on a fishing or trading vessel less than 12 metres in length for
operations out to within 200 nautical miles of the coast.
It
is a dual deck and engineering certificate. Coxswain Certificates
can be endorsed or limited depending on the service, experience
and requirements of the candidate.
TRAINING
To
be eligible for the issue by a Maritime Authority of a Certificate
of Competency as a Coxswain, the candidate must have succesfully
completed an approved training program or course.Important Notice:
As
from 1 July 2008, completion of Certificate II requires candidates
to have tasks for each unit signed off by a qualified commercial
master in the workplace. To achieve this it is essential that candidates
are either in the industry or able to obtain at least part time
casual work on a commercial or fishing vessel during their studies;
and completion must be achieved within 18 months of enrolment.

a small commercial vessel

MC9 07C - Manoeuvre a commercial vessel less than 12 metres in
length within inshore limits

ME11 07A - Contribute to effective communications and teamwork

MF32 07C - Apply domestic regulations when operating a small vessel
- TDM
MH12 07B - Plan and navigate a short voyage within inshore limits
- TDM
MR54 07B - Carry out re-fuelling and fuel transfer operations

MU5 07B - Ensure compliance with environmental considerations
in a small domestic vessel
Engineering
Knowledge (Coxswain) incorporating;
- TDM
MR30 07B - Operate and carry out basic maintenance on a small
vessel propulsion system
- TDM
MR31 07B - Operate and carry out basic maintenance on auxiliary
systems
- TDM
MR32 07B - Operate and carry out basic maintenance on extra low
voltage electrical systems, starter motors and alternators
Statements
of Attainment attesting to the satisfactory completion of a competency
based training program which includes the above units will meet
Maritime Authority requirements..

Candidates
seeking a Certificate of Competency as a Coxswain should consult

To
be eligible in general terms for the issue by a Maritime Authority
of a Certificate of Competency as a Coxswain upon completion of
training, the candidate must;
- have
attained 18 years of age;
- pass
a vision and colour-vision test;
- have
completed a declaration of medical fitness;
- provide
proof of required qualifying service;
- provide
two recent (within one year) colour passport photographs;
- provide
a recent (within one year) character reference;
- pay
the prescribed fees;
- pass
an examination conducted by the Maritime Authority..
